Sony NWZ S740

Although we are yet to receive either an official European or North American product release announcement, Sony’s latest player has been spotted at a trade show (the Sony Dealer Convention) in Japan.  Carrying on the tradition of Sony’s S-Series is the Sony NWZ S740.

Other than sporting a similar look to Sony’s S540, nothing too concrete about the player’s specs has been made available. Stating the obvious, we know that the S740 is available in a choice of yellow, pink, and black.

Rumor has it that the player will be available in either a 8GB or 16GB variety, shipping with improved earbuds. If you’re one of those ‘kids’ who likes sharing your music publicly with the rest of the world, you might be disappointed with the fact that the S740 lacks stereo speakers (at least on the front side).

Sony’s S540 has made a quick transition from being announced to being released. In fact, it was only yesterday that we uncovered Sony’s product demonstration video, an attempt at a video review of sorts.

Amazon have made the S540 available on their website and as far as we can tell, the product seems to be shipping now. All three colors of black, red, and violet are shipping in a choice of 8GB or 16GB.

The players are currently priced at $109.95 and $129.95 for the 8 and 16GB models respectively.

Sony is really trying to create buzz around its latest Sony NWZ S540 so much so that the tech giant has published a video review (of sorts) on youtube.

The video doesn’t divulge anything new, but stick a good-looking chap with a British accent in front of a camera, and we’re sure the product is inevitably going to sell.

Sony seem keen to market the player for its 42 hour continuous audio playback, its stereo speakers, and its 10.2mm thickness – all great specs!

The WALKMAN S540 video MP3 player is available from September 2009.

The guys over at CNET have managed to get their hands on Sony’s latest NWZ E440K and S540 players.  Unfortunately, they haven’t committed a video review or provided an article with in-depth analysis; however, who’s complaining about more pictures?

For those of you concerned about headphones, Jasmine France writes, “Well, I’m truly sorry to say that you won’t find integrated noise-canceling capability, upgraded headphones, SensMe Channels, or Rhapsody DNA in either of these players. (And–yes–this lazy Walkman convert is extremely letdown by those last two.)”

In case you are confused as to which player is which, the blue player is the S540 and the pink is the E440K.

Sony announces E440K player

While we were excited to get our first glimpse of the NWZ-S540, Sony’s latest player, the NWZ-E440K, takes our excitement a step further.  An MP3 player that many will confuse with an alarm clock is being dubbed as Sony’s newest “entry-level” Walkman player.

The E440K consists of an accompanying docking station available in a coordinated choice of  black or pink – yes, not much choice. White anyone?

Similar to its S540 counterpart, the E440K is being touted for its adoption of ground-breaking audio technology for increased audio quality. The player is packed with a digital linear phase speaker system as an alternative to headphone-listening allowing users to listen to music in more than one way.

The E-series player is fitted with a standard 2-inch QVGA LCD supporting 30fps video playback. Battery life is admirable with a continuous 30 hours for audio or 6 hours of video on a single charge. Available in either a flash-based 8GB or 16GB capacity, the player supports a wide variety of file formats including MPEG-4/H264.

Mac fanboys will be pleased to know Sony’s latest creation is compatible with iTunes 8.1 and higher. Additional features/accessories include an FM tuner with record functionality, a silicone sleeve for storage, a sports armband, and a charging cradle.

Available from next month, the E440K will retail for $80 and $100 for the 8GB and 16GB models, respectively.

Sony S540 set to take on Zune HD

There is little coincidence that Sony has taken it upon itself to reveal its latest pistol-packing PMP player – Sony NWZ S540 series Walkman. Today’s announcement seemingly diverts attention from Microsoft’s iPod killer, the Zune HD.

The S540 is the first of its kind, introducing built-in stereo speakers. The player is being touted for its adoption of Digital Linear Phase Speaker System, Dynamic Normalizer and Virtual Bass technology. The device includes a 5-band equalizer.

This player is not all just about the sound. With a 2.4-inch LCD display, the S540’s iPhone-like screen rotates to landscape for video and the player is bundled with a stand for desktop playback.

For you Mac fans, the S540 is compatible with iTunes 8.1; let’s just hope that this device does not meet the same fate as the Palm Pre. Additional features include file drag-and-drop support, an FM tuner/recorder and voice recorder.

The 10.2mm thick player boasts a battery life of 42 hours via headphones or 17 hours through the built-in speakers. Battery life with video playback is 6.5 hours via headphones or 5 hours through the speakers.

Sony have been sure not to leave anybody out offering the player in a choice of four colours – black, pink, violet and red.
