An iriver software update to its Plus software suite had us positioned on the edge of our seats after it was discovered that two new MP3 players, namely the iriver t8 and S100, were in the pipeline. Since we revealed the low-cost, miniature t8, the S100 has been spotted on iriver’s official website.

Just like the t8, the S100 is particularly aimed at entry-level users. Fear not, the player still boasts an assortment of features plus you receive iriver’s great build quality.

With a close resemblance to the Samsung MyFit, the S100 has a distinctive and colorful appearance with its “soft silhouette design”, an appearance not seen in other iriver player’s before it. As another take on the original iPhone/iPod Touch, the S100 features a distinctive button control (with haptic feedback) located at the bottom of the player with subtle navigational controls enclosed around it.

The video/DAB-capable device features a 2.8-inch screen (320 x 240). Expandable via microSD, the player comes in either a 4GB or 8GB storage capacity. File support is as we expect from an iRiver product with support for a host of file types including: MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, ASF, FLAC, and APE audio; MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4, WMV and H.264 video.

While not quite in the same league as the YP-RB with its 60 hours of continuous audio, the S100 comes quite close boasting either 42 hours of audio, 7.5 hours of video, or 6 hours of pure DMB on a single charge. Although no official word on price or availability, the device should be slated for a release within the next couple of weeks (if all the football promotional images are anything to go on) with prices starting at around $100 for the 4GB version.
