iriver S100 is worthy entry-level player

written by Gavin Smith on Jun 1st, 2010
Category: iRiver

An iriver software update to its Plus software suite had us positioned on the edge of our seats after it was discovered that two new MP3 players, namely the iriver t8 and S100, were in the pipeline. Since we revealed the low-cost, miniature t8, the S100 has been spotted on iriver’s official website.

Just like the t8, the S100 is particularly aimed at entry-level users. Fear not, the player still boasts an assortment of features plus you receive iriver’s great build quality.

With a close resemblance to the Samsung MyFit, the S100 has a distinctive and colorful appearance with its “soft silhouette design”, an appearance not seen in other iriver player’s before it. As another take on the original iPhone/iPod Touch, the S100 features a distinctive button control (with haptic feedback) located at the bottom of the player with subtle navigational controls enclosed around it.

The video/DAB-capable device features a 2.8-inch screen (320 x 240). Expandable via microSD, the player comes in either a 4GB or 8GB storage capacity. File support is as we expect from an iRiver product with support for a host of file types including: MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, ASF, FLAC, and APE audio; MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4, WMV and H.264 video.

While not quite in the same league as the YP-RB with its 60 hours of continuous audio, the S100 comes quite close boasting either 42 hours of audio, 7.5 hours of video, or 6 hours of pure DMB on a single charge. Although no official word on price or availability, the device should be slated for a release within the next couple of weeks (if all the football promotional images are anything to go on) with prices starting at around $100 for the 4GB version.

Speculation of a a T8 player is officially more than speculation after iRiver announced it’s new iRiver T8 audio-only MP3 player which doubles-up as a USB storage dongle.

The entry-level player is available in a single storage size (4GB) but in a selection of colors not limited to white, black, pink, light blue, light green, yellow, and orange. Making the most of its size, the T8 comes equipped with a 1-inch monochrome OLED (128 × 64 pixels) display.

As we come to expect with iRiver products, the T8 supports a number of file formats including MP3, WMA, OGG, ASF, APE, and FLAC. Choose from either normal, Pop, Jazz, Rock, Classic, soft, DBB, and SRS WOW HD with the player’s numerous audio presets.

With a battery-life of 17 hours of audio on a single charge, this player does not cut any corners. Weighing in at 26 grams, the T8 has dimensions of just 83.4 × 26.8 × 12.7 mm. Additional features include an FM tuner/recorder and voice recorder.

Viliv P3 Prime appears on Viliv website

written by Craig Matthews on May 26th, 2010

Not a word has been heard from Viliv since the HD5 was unveiled at CES at the beginning of the year, but fear not because Viliv have been rather busy behind the scenes.

Their newest player is the Android-powered Viliv P3 Prime which has officially made an appearance on the company’s website. P3? Anybody remember the glorious Samsung P3? The Prime gets a zero in terms of originality in its name.

The PMP features a nice and large 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen display with a resolution of 480×800 and 720p HD support.  It has been suggested that the Prime will be running a dual OS Android (v2.1) and Windows CE combination.

Functioning as both a audio and video player, the Prime will support MP3, FLAC and APE amongst others; no word on supported video file types. Available in capacities of up to 32GB, the Prime will include a microSD slot for storage expansion. Additional features include an accelerometer, SRS sound, HDMI output, WiFi support, and an optional DMB-tuner.

The device is only 9.8mm thick and weighs in at around 105 grams. No word on price or availability.

No sooner has the YP-RB been unvieiled, and another Samsung player comes to light. That’s right, this time it’s an Android-powered Samsung YP-MB2.  Before you suggest that this is another entry-level MP3 player like the tictoc, think again – this piece of equipment is likely to be the real-deal.

Unfortunately, all we have to go on is a product listing courtesy of Bluetooth, but naver have caught wind of both WiFi 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1 support.

Samsung YP-RB showscased in all its splendor

Samsung’s newest MP3 Player, the Samsung YP-RB, which we revealed at the beginning of the month has been showcased in a series of videos despite an unknown release date.

Not too much to learn that we didn’t already know, but we get a good feel for the interface (which lacks that much-needed touchscreen).

Another treat is the DMB-tuner. The DMB aerial has a 360-degree rotation for hard-to-receive signals and folds away nice and snug when not in use.

Recall that the YP-RB features:

  • 3-inch (400 x 200) WQVGA TFT LCD screen
  • T-DMB tuner
  • 4GB, 8GB or 16GB storage capacities expandable via microSD
  • DNSe Sound Alive technology
  • support for MP3, OGG, WMA, FLAC, and AAC audio; AVI, WMV, MP4, ASF, H.264, and DivX video; and JPEG, BMP, PNG, and GIF images
  • battery life of 6 hours of video, 10 hours of DMB, and 60 hours of audio

Philips Cam available, no sign of Muse/Ariaz

written by Gavin Smith on May 19th, 2010
Category: Philips

The first of its kind (in sorts) 2-in-1 MP3 Player and Camera, the Philips Cam, has been hitting store shelves across the states. The gadget which was first spotted at a launch party in Beijing had an air of uncertainty on whether the gadget would ever see a stateside release. Thankfully, our prayers have been answered.

Anticipated to cost around $99, the MP3 player has beat expectations with its $89.99 price tag. Our reported 1.8-inches was slightly smaller than the player’s actual 2-inch display. Philips seem keen to showcase the player’s bevel control allowing users to switch from listening to tunes to snapping a shot.

Our fears of a lack of expansion slot are allayed because the Cam’s internal memory is expandable via microSD. We have no confirmation on standard internal storage sizes other than 8GB, but I reckon it would be safe to expect 8GB, 16GB, an 32GB flavors.

Although details have been sketchy, but we can now confirm that the Cam features:

  • Philips’ FullSound™ technology for an improved listening experience
  • Integrated 2 Megapixel camera for both snapshots and video recording
  • 2-Inch full color display
  • Composite TV-out for videos/images
  • Songbird to play and sync files
  • microSD expansion slot
  • dimensions of 1.9 x 0.5 x 3.8 inches
  • weight of 82 grams

The product can be found at most major online retailers including Amazon. Check out this promotional video of the new Cam with some jargon thrown in.

Philips to launch HD capable players in June

Philips SA075

Philips‘ move from chips to pharmaceuticals might be rather short lived after the company boasted a whopping 357 percent growth in the sale of MP3/MP4 players over the previous year. Unfortunately, we not too sure if this analysis in growth is limited to a specific region (namely Asia) or to its global operations. Regardless, considering the state of the world economy that is quite an achievement. Whoever said that the MP3 player as we know it is on the last of its days?

Imp3.net recently had a sit down with Mr. Liu Deren who is the general manager of international business at Tianpeng Sheng (a company that is not only in cahoots with Philips but also manufactures a number of Philips MP3/MP4 players).

Mr Deren has revealed that Philips are set to launch a number of HD-capable MP4 players come June carrying on the tradition of the SA075 and CAM. Unfortunately, no specific details were given, but we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for a stateside release…
