Looking more like a phone than a player, Samsung today unveiled its latest creation – the Samsung M1 player. Although leaked a couple of days ago, Samsung have made an official announcement of the upcoming player at the IFA being hosted in Germany.
As the first player in line to the new “Beat” line-up, the player with its 3.3-inch screen will go up against the likes of Apple’s iPod and Microsoft’s new Zune HD. The nifty, little player offers 720p video playback via NVidia’s Tegra chipset while sporting a touch interface via “TouchWiz” (the interface used on the company’s mobile phones). The incorporation of the TouchWiz interface means that like the Zune and iPod, users will be able to download additional applications for the product – Apple be weary!
The Tegra processor also includes eight individual processors on one chip, including those for video, graphics, audio, and two ARM cores, which Nvidia said would work to minimize power consumption.
Available in either 8, 16 or 32GB storage capacities, storage is further expandable via the accompanying SD card slot. No too much stated on supported file types; although, we do know that the device is DivX compatible with easy “drag and drop” operation.
Additional features include a built-in stereo speaker, FM radio, voice recording and Bluetooth capabilities, AMOLED scratch-resistant metal design, wireless mobile games in 2D and 3D, advanced audio functionality, and an intuitive, Flash-based 3D user interface.
The M1 will be available in late September. Although the release date has been announced, there is no word on pricing.
